Bad on Gas – Excellent at Flame Throwing

When the producers of the summer action flick Death Race needed a design-build solution for an apocalyptic transport truck complete with armour plating and working flame thrower, they called F&D as their partner in mayhem.

Starting from design concepts provided by Paul Austerberry, the F&D crew, with Art Direction from Nigel Churcher were able to develop the  fabrication model to reflect the Dreadnoughts Bad intentions.   With the model done, the really hard work began. Like kids in a candy store, our staff relished working on the highway hellion as they added all the armour, slasher wheels and fully functional flame thrower. “It’s just what you need to get through traffic here in Calgary” quipped Cam Farn, F&D’s Creative Director.

You can catch Death Race on the big screen now.

GREAT LAKES HELPS SOLVE MARIA PROBLEM

Leslie Furness puts on a few finishing touches

One of the most venerable shows of all time, The Sound of Music, recently made its debut to critical acclaim in Toronto. The Canadian Press sums up “It was a lavish and visually sumptuous production”.

When Great Lakes Scenic Studios was originally tapped by Mirvish Productions to build the scenery for this triumph, we knew it was going to be something special. With acres of gold leaf, towering walls and majestic mountains it was a highly challenging and rewarding set to work on. Amusingly, the only hiccup during construction was that most of the staff just couldn’t get the Maria song out of their mind.
